Every Great Leader has a Great Coach

Every career is like a journey. There are high points and low points. Victories to celebrate and obstacles to overcome. Today, our paths are rarely predictable and ever changing. At every turn, there is an opportunity to explore new parts of yourself and learn new ways of doing things. Changes and exploring new places can be lonely. But why choose to go it alone? When you hire a coach, you get and experienced partner who has helped many others travel down these paths. Your coach gives you ongoing feedback and a confidential place to discuss goals and challenges.

When I decided to hire a coach to help me with some pivotal career decisions, I had no idea what I was doing or what coaching really was. All I knew about coaches was that executives often have a coach as a last resort to improve their performance or move on from their organization. But I needed help with a critical crossroads in my career! I had mentors and robust professional network, but my instinct told me the questions I had wouldn’t be answered by my mentors and professional network. I certainly wouldn’t be able to figure it out on my own.

So, I made one of the best decisions in my life. I hired my coach. My coach helped me to discover things about my personality that I had not noticed, and she helped me to understand how I lead and what kind of work that best aligned with my personality. Then she helped me figure out my plan for how to break from what I was to what I really wanted to be, so that I would truly have a career of passion and fulfillment. Most important in my relationship with my coach was that she didn’t give me the answers, but she was a partner who guided me to the answers I had within me and pushed me to plan for how to achieve my goals.

With as much that is changing to how we work and how we lead teams of people, many will be exploring new parts of themselves and how they can be effective in this brave new world. Professionals will need to learn to be successful by working remotely. They will need to keep themselves relevant and find new ways to gain new experiences they need to get noticed and advance their careers. Leaders will need to learn how to lead teams and keep them connected as a team. Needless to say, this is not a time to go it alone. Having a coach by your side can help to build your confidence, leverage your strengths to realize your full potential, and develop strategies to advance.

While I’m only one story of the benefits of hiring a coach, coaching is increasingly being embraced as an effective and highly personalized strategy for developing leaders and career management. The path to success is never a straight line and does not comes with a guidebook. Coaches partner with each client to identify their strengths and find the tools and strategies to realize their full potential. When it is needed, a coach has your back.
